blood & honey

I just recently abandoned a LiveJournal I had for over ten years in order to get a fresh start. I'm trying to pursue more of my interests more actively, and I'm hoping to use my new LJ as a way of doing so: blogging every day, chronicling my progress, and being active in communities.

I used to penpal, but life and crippling attention-deficit got in the way. I'm 29 years old and married, have a nice apartment and what would be considered a decent job, and yet I still feel restless (though not unhappy). I work in academia, Special Education in particular, though I'm beginning to have doubts about being a teacher (I want to work with youth, but I don't know if a traditional classroom is where I want to be. It could just be that after six years in the field, I'm ready to explore other options).

I live in Massachusetts, about 30 miles outside of Boston, and don't get into the city nearly as often as I'd like.

I like to write, when I can sustain the attention for long enough. Mostly poetry - I love poetry in form, sestinas and sonnets are my favorites - and flash fiction vignettes. I read, though I tend to go through phases when I'm either not reading at all or blazing through books. I will read basically anything, though Terry Pratchett is probably my favorite author. I adore the Harry Potter books, and loved Stephen King's The Dark Tower series until the end made me hurl my book across the room. I <3 Augusten Burroughs, David Sedaris, and Jhumpa Lahiri. Right now I'm reading Game of Thrones.

I cook, crochet, and do paper crafts -- right now I'm just starting to get into making "junk books;" I just finished one for Margaret Atwood's "you fit into me" and am doing one for William Carlos William's "Red Wheelbarrow." I'm on, and the service I offer is anonymous, handmade "feel-good" cards - I always send stickers or quote cards or decorative magnets or bags of tea, as well.

I'm a feminist, pro-choice, and vocally GLBTQ supportive, but generally non-political. I am a theist (Christian), though my religion as such does not play a huge part in my life - I believe the heart of Christianity is love and tolerance, not judgment or discrimination, and though I am not an "active" or vocal Christian, I try to live my life according to those edicts.

I am a ridiculous fangirl, my biggest fandoms at the moment being Harry Potter (I have stuck with Harry until the very end), Doctor Who, and BBC's Sherlock (I am in love with Benedict Cumberbatch). I love going to conventions, though I rarely get to; the last one I attended was a multifandomn slash con in Boston - oh, yeah, I am a big slash fan.

I'd like a penpal who shares at least a few of my interests, and I would like them to be over 21, but beyond that, I am pretty open.
